Ethnicity, Religion and Age'
The Project is supported by the European Union, PROGRESS

(The Community Programme for Employment and Social Solidarity)

Introduction

In the framework of the restricted call for proposals “National Awareness-raising Activities against discrimination VP/2007/006”, INEK-PEO has submitted a project proposal, which was finally among the two proposals from Cyprus selected for co-funding by the European Commission. The project foresees the design and upload of a website dedicated to anti-discrimination aiming at providing information and resources to interested people. The website is expected to be uploaded not later than August 2008. Until then all the information around the implementation of this project will be hosted by the website of the Cyprus Labour Institute – PEO.

For those who would like to get information by e-mail can register their interest here.

Brief description of the project

All the activities to be implemented within the framework of this project are aiming at raising awareness against discrimination, as well as supporting antidiscrimination efforts. The activities of the project focus on discrimination on the ground of racial, ethnic, religion and age. Furthermore the project is aiming at helping target groups in developing capacity to understand and reflect the antidiscrimination legislation, as well as at producing and gathering relevant reference media, to be available either in hard copies or/and online to interested people (e.g. Learn to help yourself guides, CD-Rom, antidiscrimination website).

Activities

With an international and a national conference and seminars we will help participants to get familiar with the anti-discrimination legislation and develop capacity to reflect and understand the practical application of the legislation. Furthermore, we plan to prepare and print various help-yourself-guides. These guides will provide information on the legislation and guidance as to how to react and who can help in case of discrimination. Finally, we plan to complete our project with a national action week for diversity and against discrimination. During the action week we will organise various activities to raise awareness in the general public, as well as among groups subjected to discrimination. Various awareness-raising media will be produce for this purpose.

The final time schedule of the project will be soon here available.

Target groups

The present project proposes various awareness-raising activities. The target groups vary from activity to activity and range from the general public to groups that may be subjected to discrimination. The target groups are identified in accordance with the every time addressed ground of discrimination.

For example:

- The international conference and the national conference of the project target to stakeholders who are directly or indirectly involved whether consultatively, administratively or legislatively in the formulation and implementation of antidiscrimination legislation.

- The target groups of the seminars are the civil society groups, trade unions and the groups that may be subjected to discrimination addressed, while the action week against discrimination targets the general public.

Independently of the target group, every activity will be open and accessible to any person that wishes to attend them.
